Honda Test Drive

Making test drives easily accessible and memorable

Context

Everything around us - from our cafés to our data - is constantly developing to suit our convenience, though test driving a car is one thing that hasn't become as user-centred as other aspects of our lifestyles. More often than not, a car showroom is located on a very busy road, sometimes not near the centre of town or close to offices. For someone with a very busy schedule or without access to a car already, this could make them more reluctant to find the time and method to get there. If a test drive car and dealer came to a location convenient for a potential customer - say, on their lunch break at work, or just after work to drive it home - they would be able to envisage how this car could be integrated into their day-to-day life, as well as feeling valued by the dealership.

Approach

I came up with this proactive mobile concept for the automotive sector, to bring a car test drive to the user/prospective buyer. I took this concept from wireframing to high fidelity prototyping and presented to my company's sales team, who took to it with large enthusiasm and thereafter requested several in-situ mockups of this to pitch to their various automotive clients.
My reasoning behind this idea was that by removing the barrier to accessing a car showroom,  it could enable sales growth in a car dealership.

The experience

  1. Firstly, the user is asked to select a time and location of pick-up, either using their geolocation or manually entering another address.
  2. On completion of this step, a Google Street View image of the address entered appears on screen, requesting confirmation of the location. By using Google Street View instead of a map, it makes it clearer and quicker for the user to proceed to the next stage.
  3. Data capture is needed to confirm the test drive booking because each test drive car will have drive cams installed, one facing the road and one facing the driver and cabin. This is what separates a normal test drive from this test drive experience. Throughout the trip, the drive cams will record the journey, and send the highlights to the test driver via email. Capturing the user's contact information at this point also allows for the dealership to send temporary insurance/liability documents for the user to sign as well as make follow-up contact with them.
  4. Once submitted, there is a wait period for the car to arrive, much like booking an Uber. In this time, the user can see how far the car is from their desired location, and has the option to browse features of the car in the meantime. This could be a 360 of the interior, 360 video of the exterior, or customisation tools like picking the colour and configuration of the vehicle.
  5. Upon drive completion, a video editor will select the highlights of the experience and compile these into a video of their "best bits." This is then sent to the user with the ability to share the video on social media, rate their experience, and contact the dealer. Now that's convenience!
